CCTV :Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan Sign Grand Dam Impact Assessment Deal
Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan have signed an agreement which unanimously commissions two international companies to compile an impact assessment of Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance dam. The French firms BRL and ARTELIA will study the water resource model. They will also report on the social and environmental impact of the dams construction. The result will be non-binding. The 6,000-megawatt Grand Renaissance Dam, situated close to Ethiopia's border with Sudan and being built by Italy's largest construction firm Salini Impregilo SpA, is due for completion next year. It has become a bone of contention between Ethiopia and Egypt, downstream from the dam and relying almost exclusively on the Nile for agricultural, industrial and domestic water use.

The government of Ethiopia has yet to give the go-ahead on the construction of two industrial parks after receiving an offer of half-a-billion dollars from the European Union, Britain and the World Bank. Donors hope the funds will reduce migration into Europe. But there are already concerns that those it's intended to assist won't directly benefit from the project. Coletta Wanjohi reports.

Recently, South Sudan's former Vice President, Riek Machar, was prevented from holding a media conference in Sudan's capital, Khartoum. Ethiopia has also refused to grant Machar asylum. However, political analysts in South Sudan say he still has support and should be included in the country's political process. CCTV's Patrick Oyet reports.
